David shows us how the heart of worship is the only true road to healing from our past and overcoming any present suffering—physical, emotional, or otherwise.

Forgiveness

When your hurt and suffering comes at the hand of someone else, your healing and peace will be based on your forgiveness. I have seen too many people who have tried to hurt someone else to get revenge, not forgiving them. Withholding forgiveness doesn’t bother some evildoers, but one way or another it always ends up hurting the one who holds on to bitterness. It inhibits the flow of God’s grace in our lives. The Lord’s Prayer teaches us the importance of God’s forgiveness to us and our forgiveness to others: “Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us” (Matthew 6:12). Refusing to forgive keeps us connected to the one who hurt us and tied to our pain and suffering. Paul tells us to forget the past and move on.

A young girl was sexually abused by her grandfather. As an adult, she went to a Christian counselor who let her know that freedom would only come through forgiveness. She took his words to heart and traveled to confront and forgive her grandfather. She did not say anything in front of her grandmother. She took a drive with him. She stopped the car, reminded him of what he had done to her, and told him she forgave him through the love of Jesus. She reported her story to her counselor, who was impressed and amazed.

“How did he respond?” he asked.

“He laughed and made a sexual pass at me.”

“What did you do?!”

“I told him I could not see him again, but that I still forgave him through the love of Jesus.”

That’s healing. That’s worship.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us, “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!” (Matthew 5:44). Notice what happens as we draw close to God and become more like Him—we can even pray for our enemies! That’s attacking our suffering at the root.
